Mike Bobseine, candidate for the New York State Assembly, is taking a firm stance on crime, setting himself apart with a common sense approach and responding to his opponent’s lofty promises on crime. Spoiler alert: Mike's opponent just may agree with him.
"My opponent has made bold declarations to overhaul our justice system,” Bobseine noted. "However, my conversations with seasoned judges and law enforcement experts have led me to a stark realization: one key to truly fighting crime is to empower judges with the discretion and autonomy they need. It's essential they have the capacity to assess if an individual poses a threat to our community or is likely to commit additional crimes when they determine bail eligibility."
The bail system, which determines whether someone can be released from jail before trial in exchange for money, was reformed in 2019. Further modifications last year aimed to provide judges with greater discretion.
Bobseine argues that while these reforms were a move in the right direction, they fell short of what's necessary. "It's imperative that judges have the authority to evaluate the potential risk an individual may pose to our community and consider the likelihood that the individual will commit the same or additional crimes. Our absolute commitment to 'innocent until proven guilty' must be balanced with an unwavering dedication to protecting our citizens."
For Bobseine, ensuring that judges have the tools to make these critical decisions is essential for both justice and public safety.
He also notes that his opponent serves as the First Assistant DA with the second lowest conviction rate—and highest dismissal rate—of the 62 counties in the state. “This fact speaks volumes about my opponent’s ability to crack down on crime.”
Bobseine’s objective is to build a community where everyone feels safe. This ambition drives his campaign to succeed Andrew Goodell in the Assembly.
Bobseine advocates for a strong stance over mere rhetoric. He champions judicial discretion to secure justice while providing for the safety and well-being of the community.
“As a member of the majority party in the New York State Assembly, and based upon my experience and leadership, I can accomplish more for our community than someone in the minority who has no legislative experience,” Bobseine concluded.
