For 40 years, Mike was an avid runner, running eleven marathons, including four Boston Marathons. He and Susan and their three children ran races together throughout Chautauqua County and Western New York and traveled annually to Hamilton, Ontario for Around the Bay, and Utica, New York for the Boilermaker.

Mike and Susan are also avid hikers and backpackers and have climbed all 46 of the Adirondacks High Peaks together. (Susan is ADK 46er #7600 and Mike is #7601.) For 26 years, Mike has spread his love of hiking by participating as a Hike Group Leader with The Quest, a backpacking program that takes 8th graders on a multiple backpack trips in Chautauqua County. Students from Fredonia, Brocton, Silver Creek, and Cassadaga Valley come together to participate in a one-day hike, a two-day hike, a three-day hike, and a four-day hike. Along the way, they learn and practice leave-no-trace principles, field cooking, nature study, first aid, and orienteering -- behaviors and skills that make them safe and responsible hikers who take pride in and take care of Western New York's natural resources and great outdoors!

Mike had his left hip replaced in 2021. He now walks or bicycles most everywhere. In April, he is “walkin” our 150th Assembly District  — from the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus Territory to the Audubon Preserve south of Frewsburg, a distance of more than 80 miles. Along the way, he's looking forward to meeting people, talking with students, and stopping in to local businesses to hear about people's interests and concerns all around the district!
